2017 DGPT Tour Championship: MPO Quarterfinals Recap

The most compelling weekend of the Pro Tour continued on Friday with 25 competitors battled it out for the eight coveted semi-final spots. When the dust settled, some
familiar names advanced, some stars faltered and Cinderellas were still left dancing.
The 2016 Championship allowed disc golf fans to become familiar with the Cinderella stories of the time such as Dana Vicich, James “Snappy” Cole, and Peter McBride. Although the group may not need a fairy godmother in 2017, it is clear that this competition brings out the best in them. All three will once again find themselves in the semi-finals as they hope to make a repeat of last year’s performances. McBride shot bogey-free round en-route to an 8-under par, 57 which was good enough for the second-best score of the day behind Tim Barham’s 9-under. Cole and Vicich were each one of four competitors who shot a 5-under to advance. Vicich, Cole, and McBride will hope that they have some of last year’s pixie dust to spare as they move into the semis on Saturday.
While the Cinderallas of past were dusting off their slippers, a new Cinderella may have walked down the steps. Reid Frescura was 47th in tour points coming into the event. After finishing with the second-best score to move on yesterday, Frescura matched his 5-under performance to continue to dance into the semis. Tomorrow, we will see how long the young pro can stay at the ball.
Other names that will be moving on to semi-finals include Philo Brathwaite (-6), Austin Turner (-6), and Zack Johnson (-5).
The 2017 season came to a disappointing end for those who stars who could not shoot well enough to advance on Friday. The 2017 season ended for Nate Sexton, Dave Feldburg, Devan Owens, JohnE McCray, Chris Dickerson, and Michael Johansen among others. We look forward to seeing them tear up the circuit again in 2018.
Will the Cinderella stories from 2016 continue to impress at the ball or will it be a new Cinderella or an already established star that becomes the story of the 2017 DGPT Championship? Tune in at Noon E.T. tomorrow to find out.
