The Power of Dedication: Albert Tamm’s 710-Foot Throw at the 2022 USDGC Distance Championship

By Nick Quargnenti

On a beautiful day in the summer of 2022, disc golf fans from around the world gathered at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC to witness the disc golf United States Distance Championships. The atmosphere was electric as the longest-throwing athletes in our sport prepared to showcase their skills, and the spectators eagerly waited to see the worlds best unleash incredible power.

One of the most talked-about moments of the event came when Estonian athlete, and then reigning USDGC Distance Competition Champion, Albert Tamm (PDGA# 76669), stepped up to the tee for his fourth throw in the Qualifying Round. Tamm had already thrown some impressive distances, but no one was prepared for what came next. With a powerful 71 mph throw, Tamm launched his Latitude 64 Ballista Pro down the open fairway, soaring through the air for an incredible distance of 710 feet!

The crowd erupted into cheers as the disc flew farther than most had ever seen in a competitive setting. Despite Tamm’s throw being USDGC’s long throw of the day, he fell just short in the finals finishing in 4th place behind David Wiggins and Anthony Barela.

Latitude 64 once asked Tamm for beginner’s tips, and he offered this insightful advice:

“At first – keep the tempo slow on the drives and work on timing. If you have figured out what is your ‘key’ to power, then start adding speed.”

Disc golf distance world records have been broken several times over the years, with players continually pushing the limits of the sport. The current world record for the longest throw is held by the current US Distance Champion, David Wiggins Jr. (PDGA# 24437), who threw an Innova Blizzard Boss at an astounding 1,108 feet (338 meters) at the Utah Salt Flats in 2016. At the time of David’s throw, the wind was whipping at 38-42 mph, highlighting the importance of the right equipment and environmental conditions such as high winds and ideal temperatures in achieving maximum distance.

What makes Tamm’s throw equally impressive to Wiggins’ is that he achieved this distance despite facing less favorable environmental conditions such as a left-to-right crosswind. Despite the conditions, Tamm was able to generate incredible power and control, sending the disc an impressive distance.

It’s worth noting that a player’s throw distance is affected by a variety of factors, including the player’s skill level, the type of disc used, the technique used to throw, as well as the weather and terrain conditions. Therefore, Tamm’s impressive feat should be celebrated just as much as Wiggins’ world-record throw, as both players overcame challenges to achieve incredible distances.

Albert Tamm’s astonishing throw will go down in history as one of the most impressive physical feats in disc golf. Who knows – maybe someday another player will come along and break Tamm’s record, but for now, we can all celebrate (and countlessly rewatch) one of the greatest distance throws to date.
