Get ready for the PDGA EuroTour – DGPT — PCS Open 2023

Thursday, July 13, 2023 – 02:28

The PDGA EuroTour and Disc Golf Pro Tour makes its way out to Vestnes, Norway for the 2023 PCS Open presented by Innova. The PCS Open is the sixth stop of the Euro Tour and takes place just one week before the European Open, so many of the best MPO and FPO players that had been competing on tour in the US are making their way to Norway.

The PCS Open started in 2016 as a C-Tier, eventually joining the Euro Tour and then becoming a Silver Series Event in 2022. Last year, the event was four rounds split between the Vasset Diskgolfpark and Øverås Diskgolfpark courses. The event has been shortened to three rounds this year, all of which will be played at the Øverås course. The 2023 PCS Open will also feature nearly double the FPO field size from last year.

The Øverås course has been nicknamed Ragnarock for its theme based on Norse mythology. The course is an 8,764-foot (2,671m) par 62 for the MPO field and an 8,230-foot (2,508m) par 65 for the FPO field. While generally shorter than most courses on the Disc Golf Pro Tour, the Øverås course can still prove challenging with wooded holes and tight OB lines causing plenty of score separation. To finish off the course, players will putt into an elevated basket mounted on a tractor.

The feature hole, named “Gates of Valhalla,” gives players a truly epic tee shot off a balcony and downhill into a triple mando. A triple mando was added in 2019 but was so small that many players chose to lay up instead of going for it. In 2020, the gates were added to give players more room and tempt them into an ace run.

The final round of the 2022 PCS Sula Open was a two-horse race for the FPO field. Anniken Steen started the round with a six-stroke lead but made some costly mistakes including a quadruple bogey on Hole 7 that allowed Rachel Turton to shrink the gap to only two strokes going into the back 9. By Hole 17, Steen led by only one stroke but finished strong with two pars while Turton took one last bogey on the final hole. After tapping in her last putt for the win, Steen held up the Sword trophy for her 2nd PCS Sula win in a row.

The MPO field also saw a battle at the top as Gregg Barsby and Jakub Semerád traded strokes during the final round. Both players made six birdies including three successful circle 2 putts from Barsby. Semerád had a one-stroke lead going into the final hole but went OB on his approach and took a bogey while Barsby took a par to force a playoff.

They returned to hole 18 where Semerád once again went OB but saved the par. Still, it wasn’t enough to hold off Barsby, who made one last birdie putt to secure his first DGPT victory as he hoisted the Bearded Axe trophy.
