Majestic Round 1: Sexton and Dutch on top

Nate Sexton went off on the third card. Dutch Napier went off on the 7th. 35 cards later, their scores would be 1 and 2.
Nate Sexton birdied nine of the first 11 holes. Dutch Napier, held with him, taking the lead as he carded birdies on 13 of the first 15 holes. He did not miss a putt until hole 16 including three from Circle 2.. Nate Sexton fired back with birdies on the final six holes of the 22 hole layout, and walked into the clubhouse with a lead that would stand the rest of the day.

They did it with their drives and their putts. With a field full of the best players in the game, that is what it takes to get on top. Nate Sexton leads the tournament in Circle 1s in regulation (getting within 10m of the pin in two strokes less than par). He was 77%. His birdie percentage was also 77%. Nate played solid and was heard to say after the round, “I can’t imagine anyone beating that score. I did not leave much out there.” Bogey free, 95% C1 putting, 1 for 1 in C2, and no OBs. Sexton played perfect and his three stroke lead over Dutch and six stroke lead over the rest of the pack is his just reward.

Dutch Napier did leave a little out there. He missed his first putt, from C2, on hole 16. He followed that up with an OB drive on 17 and then had a two putt on hole 18 (both inside C1). Those three holes are the difference as he finds himself three shots off the insane pace set by Sexton.

Dutch excelled in is Fairway Hits, landing an amazing 82%. If he can get his scrambles under control, he has the skills to make up the three strokes – unless Sexton hits the repeat button. And if that happens, we may be about to watch Nate Sexton jump from 18 in the Tour Standings into the Elite Eight.

Round 2 of the Majestic goes live at 2:40 CST.
