THE CHALLENGE AT GOAT HILL – ROUND ONE RECAP

The Challenge at Goat Hill is underway and after day one of competition, there is certainly a lot for fans and onlookers to get excited about going into round two of the fourth Silver Series event of the DGPT season.

In the MPO field, the talk of the town after the first round is a career high 1056 rated round of 56 (-13) from none other than the Scoober king himself, Brodie Smith. The second-year player from Texas sits at the top of the leaderboard with Ricky Wysocki and Eric Oakley for a three-way tie headed into Saturday. And before we move on, you read that last part right. Brodie Smith isn’t just touring for the second year in a row, he’s playing disc golf for his second year in a row. As in two years ago he was contemplating whether or not to pick up disc golf for the first time. Does anyone else feel a little inferior right about now? It’s okay, you’re not alone.

Eric Oakley sits tied at the top of the heap after day one and looks to continue his stellar play for a chance at what would be his first DGPT Event win.

Rounding out the lead card for round two is Team MVP’s Jordan Castro who sits two strokes back of the lead. All four players on tomorrows lead card finished round one without a single bogeys and in the case of Wysocki and Smith, an eagle on the 901 foot (par 5) hole four.

A little about the Goat Hill Park Course. Only four holes played over par in round one on the beautiful golf course property overlayed course. Holes six and thirteen tied as the toughest holes of the day for the MPO field at a .41 stroke over par average. However, hole six proved to ruin a few more people’s day with 42 OB strokes claimed from the MPO division alone. The par three 13th also proved difficult in both divisions with the FPO field averaging a full stroke over par. Despite some hurdles throughout the round, the course did prove to give back some birdies to finish with a round one average on 2.47 strokes under par in the MPO field.

Defending Champion Ohn Scoggins looks to add to her already impressive list of wins in 2021 including The Memorial and the St. Patrick’s Classic earlier this season.

In the FPO division, Ohn Scoggins finished the first round one stroke ahead of her nearest competitor with a 65 (-2) which was rated 956, respectfully. Scoggins, who lost some strokes to her card mates after a double-bogey five on the thirteenth hole, rallied back with a three-hole string of birdies to finish her round on top of the pack.

Just behind Scoggins heading into round two are Nicole Bradley and Holyn Handley who currently sit tied for 2nd place just one stroke behind Scoggins. Rounding out tomorrows lead card is Lisa Fajkus who sits two back of the lead with an opening round of 67.

Lisa Fajkus, who already has two top five finishes at DGPT events this season, looks to fight herself into a podium spot this weekend in Oceanside, CA.

The FPO division is just getting started and looks to be the start of what should be a great battle between the top two or three cards. Fans will want to keep a watchful eye on live scoring as many are predicting lots of movement and potential lead changes as round two commences.

Other noteworthy mentions in the FPO field on day one include Jennifer Allen’s (currently T-8th) eagle on the par 5 hole sixteen. Allen, who dominated Goat Hill in 2019 and finished 2nd in 2020, carded the only eagle of the day out of all twenty-six players in the division and did so with a 16-foot tap in. She will look to pick up some strokes in round two by staying inside of the ropes and cashing in on a few more circle 1 putts in order to jump up to the lead card heading into the final day.

Jennifer Allen aims to bounce back to the lead card after five OB throws on Friday pushed her back to the chase card heading into round two.

Scores and stats will be available via UDisc Live, and tune in on May 9th, at 4:00 EST to catch the final round live on the Disc Golf Network. Post-production coverage of the first round MPO lead card will be available from Central Coast Disc Golf, and next-day coverage of the FPO lead card from GK Pro.
