Utah Open FPO Day One: Weese and Allen Tied at the Top

The Utah Open presented by Prodigy Disc kicked off with much fanfare this week showing how Disc Golf Pro Tour events create a festival atmosphere complete with
top-notch professional play. This rings true for the FPO division where for most of the round today it was a race to see who would end up with the lead. At one point Jessica Weese had a one throw advantage with five other players in the field all tied in second behind her.
During the first nine holes of competition players like Karina Knowles, Kona Panis, Paige Bjerkaas, Lisa Fajkus, and Catrina Allen were all within one of the lead. However, as players moved into the back nine, we began to see some scoring separation.
Karina Knowles was making a bid for the lead card up until she carded a double bogey on the par three hole 13. Two more bogeys on holes fifteen and sixteen ultimately landed her in a tie for fifth place at the end of the round. Colleen Thompson will also be on the chase card tomorrow after she started the day four over after three holes. She was able to reign in the bogeys on the back nine and birdie hole 18 to finish her round sharing the 5th place tie with Karina.
Kona Panis was one who was in the hunt for the day; however, when she matched her four over front nine performance on the back nine, it left her in the clubhouse hoping to make it on the chase card for round two. After the other cards made it in she was able to move up enough spots to be third on the chase card starting out tomorrow morning.
Today’s feature card included Jessica Weese, Catrina Allen, Lisa Fajkus, and Paige Bjerkaas. Jessica jumped out to an early lead, but as noted, the rest of the card was in hot pursuit. For the first few holes, Lisa Fajkus and Paige Bjerkaas were sticking close; however, the story at Mulligan’s Creekside is how well you play the OB and Lisa Fajkus was the first one to succumb to the OB but was able to correct things on the back nine to finish +5 tied for second. Paige Bjerkaas did not catch OB as much as Lisa; instead, she struggled to get her C2 putts to land, carding a 0% C2 putting average for the day. However, Paige was able to hit her goal for the round which was +5, keeping her on the lead card and in a tie for second place.
This morning looked like Jessica Weese was going to set the pace for the tournament. After carding a birdie on hole two and only a bogey on hole four, Jessica was able to start out with a two throw lead. However, she gave her lead right back after she carded a double-bogey six on hole five after going OB twice. Her double-bogey created a four-way tie for first among the lead card. However, she would quickly regain her two throw lead when she was the only player on the feature card to make the island on hole six and convert the birdie. Jessica would maintain this lead until hole 15 where she threw OB on the drive and carded a bogey. Catrina Allen was able to land the par on the hole which moved her within one. However, Jessica showed she was not ready to give the round away, parking hole 17 for the birdie and giving herself a two throw lead going into hole 18.
With the box on hole 18, Jessica Weese popped her drive up and faded out right, missing the island. Catrina Allen stepped onto the box and parked her drive. Jessica was unable to convert from the drop zone, and a two throw swing on the final hole placed her and Catrina in a tie for first place at +2 after day one.
