WACO 2018 FPO Preview: Who Can Stop Paige Pierce?

The wait is almost over. We are less than 24 hours to the beginning of the Waco Charity Open Presented by Dynamic Discs, better known as just WACO. WACO has been
running for decades and has a history as a great event for players and spectators alike. By joining the DGPT these last few years the event is now truly not one to miss. In the Open Women’s Division, there are 16 players, complete with many of the tour staples.
All three players from last year’s top three spots at WACO are signed up to play starting tomorrow. Paige Pierce and Sarah Hokom are household names if you have been following disc golf at all the last few years. Pierce, unsurprisingly dominated the 2017 WACO tournament with a wire-to-wire victory. The closest anyone came to keep Pierce from the top of the podium was during round three. Hokom carded 5 birdies in the first 9 holes to briefly tie Pierce before doing the exact opposite on the back nine. In the last nine holes, Hokom bogeyed 5 holes and only birdied one, while Pierce only carded one bogey in the entire round. Watch Hokom to see if she can keep the pressure on Pierce.
A less well-known player, but a great player nonetheless is Stephanie Vincent, who placed third at WACO last year. Vincent may have finished 20 throws behind Pierce but she beat out Catrina Allen, Des Reading, and Lisa Fajkus. All of these players are returning to TX this week to likely chase Paige Pierce as she seems to be carrying all of the momentum of last year’s historic run with her into the 2018 season.
So the question remains, can Paige Pierce be stopped? If I were to bet on it, I’d bet on no. She may have had a few stumbles at the Las Vegas Challenge but she bounced right back for the victory. By the time she made it to the Memorial Championship all those early season kinks had been worked out – Pierce took home another wire-to-wire victory, throwing the hot round all four days. Honestly, how do you stop someone when they are playing this well this consistently? The only way to find out is to tune in and watch.
